B-There Travel Blog

Madeira

Madeira, an island located off the west coast of Morocco, holds host to stunning scenery, dramatic coastlines, quaint mountain villages and exquisite gardens. The island is well known for its excellent green spaces and exotic landscapes, whilst the cosmopolitan and vibrant town of Funchal combines historic splendour and breathtaking natural beauty with a warm, modern atmosphere. Madeira is a unique destination, offering a full range of activities and watersports for all ages, while those looking for a relaxing break can enjoy the range of natural parks to explore at your own pace. With a subtropical climate, the island’s weather is pleasant all year round, with hot summers and mild winters.

PICO DO ARIEIRO

Tips when travelling to Madeira:
  • Rent a car in Madeira! It is cheap, and the best way to visit a European island, it gives you the freedom you need.

  • Direct flights are recommended.

  • On the coast, daytime temperatures hover around 20/21 degrees Celsius (68/70 °F) from December to April, and reach 25/26 °C (77/79 °F) from July to October. It rarely gets cold, however, from January to March there can be cool days, with highs around 15 °C (59 °F).

BEST THINGS TO DO IN MADEIRA:

PICO RUIVO -

The highest point of Madeira. You can drive your car to Achada do Teixeira. From there, the hike lasts for about 1,5h and is of intermediate difficulty. If you start hiking around 4pm, you can watch the sunset and be the last ones descending the mountain. From the starting point to the top, you walk above the clouds, truly magical!

NATURAL SWIMMING POOLS AND SEIXAL BEACH -

Another highlight of our trip were the natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz. The pools are made up of volcanic rock, into which the sea flows naturally.

LEVADA WALK -

Madeira is also known for it’s magical walks alongside irrigation canals. (that were originally made to transport water from the north of the island to the south) You get to see fauna and flora that are unique in the world.

PICO DO ARIEIRO -

There’s just something about witnessing a sunrise, especially when you can experience it above the clouds! Pico do Areeiro is the third highest peak in Madeira and is accessible by car.

Beach Destinations

📍 Funchal | ✈️ 8h 10m

Portuguese city known for its Madeira wine cellars, Sé Cathedral & 17th-century São Tiago Fortress.

📍 Porto Santo Island:

Portuguese island with dive sites, sandy Porto Santo Beach & Christopher Columbus House Museum.

Prainha Beach - Algarve

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants.

So if you like nature, hiking, good weather, chilling on the beach and cheap & good food, Madeira is the place to be!
